This is a Psalm of David comparing Man’s wickedness with God’s perfections. David then provides an assessment of the wicked that is very pointed and powerful regarding their current state,
Verse 1” An oracle within my heart concerning the transgression of the wicked. There is no fear of God before his eyes”.
Note: Let us remember that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The scriptures teach us that only a fool will say there is no God. The wicked act as though there is not a God and therefore no consequences. When man takes God out of the picture, he then positions himself against the Kingdom of God. We know that if God be for us then who can be against us. The other side of that equation is that if God is not for you then you are fair game for Satan’s folly. The arch enemy of your soul will play you like a fiddle and the sad part is you gave him permission to do this by excluding God.
Verse 2 “For he flatters himself in his own eyes, when he finds out his iniquity and when he hates”. (3) The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; He has ceased to be wise and to do good. (4) He devises wickedness on his bed: He sets himself in a way that is not good; He does not abhor evil”.
Note: The wicked tells himself lies of flattery and the sad part is he believes them. This is the ultimate deception. He has become god in his own eyes and does not recognize its cost or impact on his life.
Now we are about to see the profound light of God’s love and grace.
Verse 5 “Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. (6) Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgements are a great deep; O Lord you preserve man and beast.
Note: The Psalmist begins by describing the attributes of God: Mercy, Faithfulness, righteousness, Judgements. What a contrast to the wicked is seen here. The eyes of the wicked are blinded by their own deceit while the eyes of the child of God has their vision illuminated by the light of God.
- He sees mercy (not a cry of justice for what we deserve)
- Faithfulness (always the same in every circumstance, you can always count on Him)
- Righteousness (is an attribute of moral purity belonging to God alone) God inventoried lost humanity and made the decision to impute (transfer) His righteousness to us. That is why believers can now say “I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus”. I did not earn it but God gave it to us when we were saved.
- Judgements (rendering a final verdict) A warning of impending Judgement is mercy applied and made available to the believer. The supreme Judge of the universe is Almighty God and He will judge the wicked one day. Today is the warning while there is still life in you to turn toward God and avoid the wrath of God.
The call is being extended today dear reader. It requires a simple response from you. Admit you are a sinner and need a Savior. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ that He died for your sins and wants to save you today. Confess that Jesus Christ died for you and rose again and is now your Savior. Welcome to the family of God.
